A 24-year-old school teacher was sentenced to 10 years in prison after having a sexual relationship with one of her 8th-grade students “on a daily basis.” The teacher, Alexandria Vera, became pregnant as a result of the relationship and had an abortion. She turned herself in to the Houston police in June 2016 and was charged with the crime. Her bail was set at $100,000, and she was placed on administrative leave by the Aldine Independent School District. Despite being released under certain conditions, including GPS tracking and staying off the internet, Vera violated her parole twice without facing legal consequences. She pleaded guilty to aggravated sexual assault of a child in November 2016 and was sentenced on January 13, 2017. The school district stated that the safety and security of its students and staff remained a top priority.
