Alexandria Vera, a 24-year-old schoolteacher from Houston, Texas, made headlines when she admitted to having a nine-month affair with her 13-year-old student, culminating in an aborted pregnancy. As an English teacher at Aldine ISD’s Stovall Middle School, she was sentenced to 10 years in prison for aggravated sexual assault of a child.

Their relationship began when they first met on Instagram, and what is more bizarre than their relationship is that the boy’s parents knew about it and approved of their relationship. The boy even introduced Vera to his parents as his girlfriend. The complete timeline of their love story looks something like this:

The complete timeline of Alexandria Vera’s love story looks something like this.

  • Late summer 2015: Vera was informed that the boy had been assigned to her class for the upcoming school year, and their flirtation continued.
  • September 2015: After the boy missed class, Vera messaged him on Instagram to check on him. He asked for her phone number and they arranged a meeting. They kissed during the meeting, and the next day they had sex for the first time.
  • October 8, 2015: Vera met the boy’s parents for the first time at the school’s open house. A few days later, she went to dinner at their house and was introduced as his girlfriend.

  • January 2016: Vera became pregnant and the boy’s family accepted the news and were excited about the baby.
  • February 2016: Child Protective Services showed up at school a month later and questioned her about the boy, but she denied the relationship. The suspicion spooked her into aborting the baby. Vera then called the school district’s police department and answered many messages about her relationship with the boy.

After the allegations of the relationship became public, Alexandria Vera was removed from the school and placed on administrative leave.

Where is Alexandria Vera now?

She pleaded guilty to aggravated sexual assault of a child in November 2016 and was sentenced on January 13, 2017. The state District Judge, Michael McSpadden, said the sentence was intended to send a message and make an example of her, as he was aware of many similar cases.

“We want our educators to teach our students. We want them to keep their hands off the students,” the judge said.

Vera was initially charged with continuous sexual abuse of a child, which carries a maximum life prison sentence, but she pleaded guilty to a lesser assault charge. She will be eligible for parole in five years. Vera was later released under certain conditions, including staying at her house between 8 p.m. and 7 a.m., staying off the internet, and being tracked by GPS.

Despite being released under certain conditions, including house arrest, curfew, and GPS tracking, Vera violated her parole on two occasions – running around the track of a school and being late returning home from a shopping center. However, the prosecution did not take any legal action against her for these violations.

Vera isn’t the only one from Stovall Middle School

Vera is not the first teacher from Stovall Middle School to be accused of impropriety with a student. Felicia A. Smith was charged with an improper relationship with a student after she allegedly gave him a lap dance. The 15-year-old student reported that the dance was given to him as a birthday celebration and that the whole class had encouraged him to sit at the front of the room. Smith allegedly ended the dance by hugging the student and telling him, “I love you, baby. Happy birthday.”
